More than aid, a livelihood

Thirty years after the genocide, many families who returned to rural Bosnia still struggle to make a living from their land. An indoor farm gives them something that lasts.

Growing all year

A 100 m² covered farm shelters crops from snow, wind and frost, so the harvest doesn't stop when the weather turns.

Food on the table

Fresh vegetables for the family every season, protecting them from rising food prices.

An income that grows

Surplus crops are sold locally, giving families earned income close to home.

Training and support

Every family gets hands-on training from an agronomist and a full year of support in the field.

Stronger together

Families share a cultivator and buy, transport and sell together for better prices.

Land kept in use

Farms sit on waqf land and can never be sold, keeping families rooted on land they fought to return to.

Crops growing inside an Indoor Sustainable Farm in Bosnia

A way out of poverty, not just through it

Instead of returning every year with the same relief, we give families a farm they can build a future on.

  • Families of five or more, returnees and women-led homes come first.
  • Each farm is matched to what that family needs to get above the poverty line.
  • We follow every family for three years and report honestly on how they're doing.

The growing year

Cool-season greens and warm-season fruit take turns, so there's something to harvest in every season.

1 Jan – Mar

Winter greens

Lettuce, spinach, spring onions, radish and rocket, even through the Bosnian winter.

2 Apr – Jun

Summer crops go in

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes and beans, planted in stages.

3 Jul – Sep

Peak harvest

Summer crops are picked and sold while broccoli, cauliflower and kale are sown.

4 Oct – Dec

Back to greens

Leafy crops return, and families raise their own seedlings for next year.

An example plan. Our agronomist adjusts it for each farm's land and weather.

One farm grows the next

When a family is standing on its own feet, their farm helps another family start theirs.

1

Family first

Nothing is asked of a family until they're safely above the poverty line with savings put aside.

2

Giving back

Families then give a small share of their extra income into our Farm Forward Fund.

3

A new farm

By year three, the fund aims to build a brand new farm for another family in need.
