The 4 Sacred Months of Islam are:
- Rajab
- Dhul Q’ada
- Dhul Hijjah
- Muharram
What does this mean for the month?
During these months it is important for no fighting, transgression or injustice to be carried out, as they are forbidden during the Sacred months. We should increase in closeness and consciousness of Allah in order to draw closer to him, to strengthen in spirituality.
Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah At-Tawbah...
“Surely the reckoning of months, in the sight of Allah, is twelve months, laid down in Allah’s decree on the day when He created the heavens and the earth; and out of these months four are sacred. That is the true ordainment. Do not, therefore, wrong yourselves, with respect to these months.” Qur’an 9:36
The Prophet ﷺ said in a sermon during Hajj...
“Time has completed a cycle and assumed the form of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year contains twelve months of which four are sacred, three of them consecutive, Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and also Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha’ban.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]
How do I make the most of the Sacred Months?
As Allah has made these months Sacred, it is important to stay away from sins, seek repentance for our misdeeds and also to increase in good deeds as much as possible!
We can use these months as an opportunity to increase ourselves in purity of thought, action and goodness towards others.
Allah says in The Qur’an “…and whoever honours the sacred ordinances of Allah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.” Qur’an 22:32
