The Birth of Isa AS (Jesus) According to The Qur’an

Have you read the story of Jesus' birth according to The Qur'an?

Every birth is a Miracle...

The birth of Jesus (peace be upon him) in Islam is miraculous as Jesus was born without a father. This miracle inspires awe into the hearts of all who learn of it, because God simply says “Be” and it is! But what are the details to this Blessed Birth according to The Qur’an?

The miracle begins with solitude...

Mary, or Mariam lived a life of seclusion and solitude in worship to God Most High. The Angel Gabriel, or Jibraeel AS according to The Qur’an, approaches Mary in her private living quarters, startling her and frightening her! Their conversation is narrated in verses 18-21 of the Qur’an in The Chapter of Mary known as Surah Mariam!

“…Then We sent to her Our angel, Gabriel, appearing before her as a man, perfectly formed. She appealed, “I truly seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you! So leave me alone if you are God-fearing.” – Qur’an 19:17-18

To which the Angel Gabriel AS replied…

“I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.”

Why was Mary scared?

A man appeared to have entered her private living quarters, without permission! This area where Mary lived was within the Mosque and was a private space dedicated for her to worship God Most High. For a man to appear in this space is something which simply didn’t happen. She replied to The Angel Gabriel in shock of his news.

She said, “How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?” Quran 19:20 She said, “My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?” – Quran 3:47

To which the Angel Gabriel AS replied…

[The angel] said, “Such is God ; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is. – Quran 3:47

How did Mary become pregnant?

By the will and power of God, The Angel Gabriel blew the spirit of Jesus AS into Mariam AS, causing her to become instantly pregnant with Jesus or Isa (as per the Qur’an). This action is not deemed strange in the eyes of Muslims, for it is a manifestation of God Almighty’s power. The way in which Jesus was created is likened to the creation of Adam AS the first human or the first of every tree and animal!

˹There is also the example of˺ Mary, the daughter of  Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her womb through Our angel Gabriel. She testified to the words of her Lord and His Scriptures, and was one of the sincerely devout. – Qur’an 66:12

Mary was aware of the superstitions which would arise regarding her virgin pregnancy. So she retreated to a remote place and remained in seclusion until labour began at the end of her pregnancy.

“So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.” Quran 19:22

What was said about the birth?

Once the pangs of labour befell Mary, she withdrew to the trunk of a palm tree, where she fell to its base and cried out in pain.

“And the pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said: “I wish I had died before this and had become something totally forgotten!” Qur’an 19.23

Mary was wishing this hand’t befallen her as she knew how the people of the town would view this miracle as an unfavourable act as opposed to the miracle that it is! God responded to her call by providing her with water and dates to help strengthen her through the labor.

“Then he called her from beneath her: “Do not grieve! Your Lord has placed a rivulet beneath you. (19.24) And shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you, and it will let fall fresh dates upon you. Qur’an 19.25

She gave birth to our liege-lord Jesus – upon our Prophet and upon him the best blessings and salutations of peace! The lights of Jesus dawned upon this earth. When he saw the [distraught] state of his mother he addressed her even as he was in her womb or from below her [after birth]. He caused her to apprehend another meaning that reminded her of the magnificence of God Who is with her – High and Exalted!
