The Significance of Dhul Hijjah

We are now in the first ten days of this sacred month, but what is the significance of Dhul Hijjah and it’s first ten days? The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘There are no days during which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days.’ (Bukhari). The first ten days of this month are filled with all the core acts of worship, such as fasting, hajj, and plentiful dhikr, and thus their virtue is exalted. Fasting one of these days is equal to the reward of fasting for a whole year, and standing in one of these nights, in prayer, is equal to standing in prayer on Laylatul Qadr (Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah), and the reward for actions in these days is also multiplied seven hundred times!

Further, The Day of Arafah, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, is the greatest day of the year. Fasting that day wipes out the sins of the previous year and the year to come.

These are days in which we should remember Allah abundantly. Allah says that they remember the name of Allah on well-known days ( Quran 22:28). These “well-known days” according to the majority of scholars are the ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. This is why the Prophet said that in these days we should make abundant tahlil (saying la ilaha ill’Allah), takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) and tahmid (saying alhamdulillah) (Imam Ahmad).

Ibn `Umar and Abu Hurayra would go into the marketplace in these days and raise their voices with the takbir. The people in the marketplace would then raise their voices with the takbir in response (Bukhari). Thus the most hated place to Allah, a place where most people are heedless of Him, was filled with His remembrance

The best prayer is the prayer of the Day of Arafah. The best thing which I and the Prophets before me have said is:

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَ هَو عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِيرٌ

There is no deity save Allah alone. He has no partners. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise and He has power over all thing

So How Can We Benefit From These Blessed Days?

1. Fast for the 9 days of Dhul-Hijjah – if you can’t fast all nine days, then try to fast on the day of Arafah as this will extinguish the sins of the previous year and the coming year!  Fasting Monday, and Thursday or both means you fulfil the sunnah, and likewise if you fast three of these days you fulfil the sunnah of fasting three days in every month!

2. Make abundant Tahlil, Takbir, Tahmid, and Salawat. Allah tells us that He is with us and remembers us when we remember Him, and whenever we send greetings to the Beloved Prophet he receives them and returns them

3. Remember Allah from Fajr till Ishraq. To pray the Ishraq prayer carries the reward of a complete Hajj!

4 . Attend a gathering of knowledge; the virtues of seeking knowledge are numerous, and one of these is that Allah makes the path to Jannah easy for one who does so!

5. Pray Isha, and Fajr in congregation. “…And whoever prays Isha and Fajr in congregation then he has (the reward as if he had) spent the entire night standing (in prayer)” (Tirmidhi).

6. Fulfilling the needs of, and making Du’a for, your brother or sister: “There is no believing servant who supplicated for his brother behind his back (in his absence) that the Angels do not say: The same be for you too.” (Sahih Muslim)

7. Make a Prophetic, Quality Qurbani. One of the most notable acts of worship in these ten days is the Qurbani. So click the button below and give a Prophetic Qurbani that will ensure thousands get to experience the joy of Eid
