Ramadan Thirds

Thirds of Ramadan

How to make the most of each third (Ashra) of Ramadan

The Prophet Muhammed ﷺ said: “This is a month, the first part of which brings Allah’s Mercy, the middle of which brings Allah’s forgiveness, and the last part of which brings emancipation from the hellfire.” [Bukhari]

Ramadan is split into 3 thirds each lasting 10 days:

• 1st Third of Mercy

• 2nd Third of Forgiveness

• 3rd Third of Emancipation from the hellfire.

Each third has its own special dua in which it is highly encouraged to recite regularly. The duas are as follows:

The First Third of Ramadan

It is widely encouraged to recite the following dua during days 1-10 of Ramadan:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Rabbi ighfir warham wa anta khayrur raahimeen.

O my Lord! Forgive me and have mercy and You are the Most Merciful.

[Surah Al Muminun:118]

The Second Third of Ramadan

It is widely encouraged to recite the following dua during days 11-20 of Ramadan:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللہَ رَبِّی مِنْ کُلِّ زَنْبٍ وَّ اَتُوْبُ اِلَیْہِ

Astagfirullaha rab-bi min kulli zambiyon wa-atoobuilaiyh.

I seek forgiveness from Allah for all my sins and turn to Him.

The Final Third of Ramadan

It is widely encouraged to recite the following dua during days 21-30 of Ramadan:

اَللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ

Allahumma Ajirna min-an-naar.

O Allah, protect us from the fire.

It is virtuous to seek much forgiveness in Allah all-year long. This is a practise we should carry through beyond Ramadan – to always ask Allah to shower his Mercy and forgiveness upon the Ummah.
