When considering the story of Ibrahim AS the question may arise: Who was the Father of Ibrahim AS? Many believe that Ibrahim AS was the son of Azar, an idol worshipper. But is this truly the case?
When looking at the Qur’an, you see that there is the use of the word “ab” in reference to Azar. Whilst this does mean father, amongst Arabs it was common to call one’s uncle “ab” as well. Further, the ascendants of the Prophet SAW were not polytheists. This in addition to the Prophet Ibrahim AS making Du’a for his walid, after Allah SWT had forbidden the making of Du’a for polytheists, makes it clear that Azar was not Ibrahim AS’s father, but rather his uncle.
See the verse below where Ibrahim AS eventually cuts ties with Azar.
“As for Abraham’s prayer for his father’s [uncle] forgiveness, it was only in fulfilment of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to Abraham that his father [uncle] was an enemy of Allah, he broke ties with him. Abraham was truly tender-hearted, forbearing.”
— (Quran 9:114).
and the verse where Ibrahim AS makes Du’a for his actual parents:
“Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when judgement will come to pass.”
— (Quran 14:41)
The legacy of Ibrahim AS remains to this day, with believers all around the world making the same Du’a and performing the Hajj rites such as Qurbani.
