Commemorating the Genocide of Srebrenica
It’s 29 years since the Genocide of Srebrenica took place in Bosnia. Echoes of the dark events which took place ripple through our memories as we witness genocide unfolding before our eyes in Gaza. Events that the survivors of Srebrenica hoped so hard to stop, by keeping the memory of the victims of Srebrenica alive with the memorial each year in July, to which the intention is:
“By remembering the pain of the past and learning its lessons, we can together resolve that it must never happen again.”
Srebrenica leaves a scar upon the hearts of all who witness it. The current death toll stands at 8,372. Victims were killed in cold blood after taking refuge from the war in the enclave of Srebrenica in what had been declared as a safe zone. This is all too familiar today in 2024, witnessing massacres in the “safe” areas of Rafah, Khan Younis and beyond in Gaza. As the death toll of Srebrenica grows year on year as newly discovered victims are laid to rest, the death toll in Gaza continues to grow.
A people cannot recover from genocide even in a lifetime. This is central to why we founded Revive’s Bosnia Appeal, to help Bosnia to heal from genocide. Thousands of widows were left heartbroken, without their loved ones and plunged into a cycle of poverty which they still suffer from to this day. You can help by donating and showing them that the world hasn’t forgotten them.
Collecting for the Genocide in Gaza
Pain and suffering of the victims of Srebrenica and their families is still alive today, as they stand at the memorial where graves stretch as far as the eye can see. So what about those trying to survive through the genocide of Gaza?
The people of Gaza are in urgent need of food and basic survival needs.
